v0.1.0 · Chrome Web Store listing coming soon

What it does

Every London listing card gets a colour-coded badge: an indicative 0–100 safety score and a caution level (Low, Normal, or Elevated) for the neighbourhood the stay is in. Hover a badge for the ward, borough, and the month of the underlying police data. Searches outside London are left untouched.

How to use it

There is nothing to configure: search London stays on Airbnb or Booking.com as usual and the badges appear on the result cards. Click any badge to open the area's full free report here — recent crime trends, transport links, and safer nearby alternatives. The extension icon's popup lets you switch either site off.

Where scores come from

Scores for all ~700 London electoral wards are computed nightly from UK Police open data, anchored to official deprivation statistics — the same methodology as every report on this site. They are travel-planning context, not a guarantee of personal safety.

How to install

We are preparing the official Chrome Web Store listing. Until it is live, installing takes a minute in any Chromium browser (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera):

  1. Download the extension

Grab the zip below and extract it anywhere on your computer (you will need to keep the extracted folder).

  2. Open your browser's extensions page

In Chrome, Edge, or Brave, go to chrome://extensions (edge://extensions on Edge) and switch on “Developer mode” — a toggle in the page corner.

  3. Load it

Click “Load unpacked” and select the extracted folder. The Then Travel shield appears next to the address bar, and you are done — there is no sign-up.

Privacy

The extension collects no personal data — no browsing history, no account, no analytics, no cookies.

It makes one kind of network request: downloading the public, read-only ward-score dataset from london.then.travel (cached in your browser and refreshed every six hours). Matching listings to neighbourhoods happens entirely on your device; nothing about your searches or the listings you view is ever transmitted anywhere.

The badges are free for everyone. If a paid tier for on-demand detailed reports is introduced later, payments would be handled by a dedicated provider and this policy will be updated first.
